Journal des Dames et des Modes

In Paris, in the early 20th Century, a new genre of printmaking was started by Paul Poiret, the couturier, when he commissioned a limited edition album of his fashions. The process, which is called pochoir, is silk screening and uses upto 30 stencils for one image. The designs were by well-known fashion illustrators and were influenced by Japanese woodblock prints, the stong colors of the Fauves painters, by Cubism and the Postimpressionists.

One of these limited Editions was the Journal des Dames et des Modes which dates from 1912 to 1916 and contains nearly 190 color plates Only 1279 copies of this album were ever produced and complete sets are very rare. There are images by many artists, including Bakst, Barbier, Brunelleschi and Drian. Most pages are signed by the artist.
