Since leisure time as we know it today was restricted to the upper classes or the rich before the 20th century, there had been little time for sports in the lives of the vast majority of people. Other than riding habits, most people wore their old clothes for sports. In the second half of the 19th century, this began to change. Gradually special wear for sports evolved whose designs have inspired future generations of avant garde designers who understood that the combination of aesthetics with functionalism was relevant to the needs of women who were increasingly active in their lives.
